Why Zelda Fans Think Majora’s Mask Will Be the Next Zelda Remake

Zelda fans were pleasantly surprised when Nintendo announced in June 2026 that an Ocarina of Time remake was in development. Nintendo also released a trailer, but it didn’t show much, and the developer remained tight-lipped about any details regarding the game. This changed in September 2026, when fans finally got to see the Ocarina of Time remake’s gameplay in The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct. There was no information about a Majora’s Mask remake being planned for the future, but some fans believe there were hints in the broadcast.

What Started the Majora’s Mask Remake Speculation

The latest speculation among fans was sparked by something that was seen during The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct’s UK broadcast. The Majora’s Mask logo was displayed during the broadcast, and fans noticed that the typography was different. This started a discussion among fans, with many claiming that Nintendo hasn’t changed the Majora’s Mask logo in over two decades. The speculation was strengthened by the fact that Nintendo kept the original logo even when Majora’s Mask was released for the 3DS. Nintendo editing a 20+-year-old game’s logo was odd, which is why fans questioned whether there was a deeper meaning in the change.

Some fans even began to speculate that Nintendo had intentionally shown the edited Majora’s Mask logo in the Zelda Direct. Nintendo hasn’t confirmed anything, and there is no verified information about whether Majora’s Mask is being remade or if there are even any plans for such a thing in the future. However, the logo has energized fans who have become hopeful that Nintendo may, in fact, work on a Majora’s Mask remake. Some have even gone as far as to claim that since the Zelda 40th anniversary is ongoing, Nintendo could release a Majora’s Mask remake in November 2027, exactly a year after the Ocarina of Time remake releases.

The Ocarina of Time Remake Could Make the Majora’s Mask Remake Easier

Ocarina of Time remake changes

Nintendo has revealed in the past that Ocarina of Time was a major factor that helped in the development of Majora’s Mask. This is because Shigeru Miyamoto had challenged the development team to make the game in just a year. The development team repurposed many Ocarina of Time models and assets to meet the tight schedule. Fans argue that Nintendo could do the same thing it did two decades ago to remake Majora’s Mask. Creating original 3D models is time-consuming, especially when a developer is remaking a game, as they may not want to put in the effort. However, Nintendo has a way to streamline things, as a potential foundation already exists.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Ocarina of Time remake was made from “the ground up.” This has led to fans arguing that the developer could repurpose these remade and modern 3D models to make a Majora’s Mask remake. While this may be possible, it remains speculation at the time. However, fans believe that Nintendo has a good opportunity to capitalize on the Zelda hype and release Majora’s Mask as a sequel to the Ocarina of Time remake.

Nintendo Has Already Done This Before

Majora’s Mask remake

Nintendo has done what fans are speculating in the past, for both the N64 and the 3DS. Ocarina of Time was released on the N64 in 1998, and Majora’s Mask hit the shelves two years later. The same thing happened on the 3DS, with Ocarina of Time 3D releasing in 2011, and Majora’s Mask 3D going on sale four years later. While this doesn’t confirm that a similar pattern will be followed on the Switch 2, fans are basing their speculation on the fact that Nintendo did the same thing on two different consoles.

The stronger element in these historical examples is that the N64 games were sequels, but the 3DS titles were remakes. This means that Nintendo releasing the two games on the N64 may not be evidence that the same will happen again. However, the 3DS titles stand out because they are remakes similar to the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time remake.

Nintendo’s interview series, Iwata Asks, also revealed something interesting about the development of Majora’s Mask. The development team reportedly started discussing Majora’s Mask 3D six months after Ocarina of Time 3D was released. This may be the case for the Majora’s Mask remake as well, if Nintendo hasn’t considered the option yet.

If the Ocarina of Time remake becomes a huge success, then that may give Nintendo a push toward remaking Majora’s Mask. But it’s unlikely there would be any news before the developer wanted to make things official. However, the previous pattern, the use of shared assets, and the game being a sequel make it a possibility for Nintendo to release a Majora’s Mask remake. For now, fans can wait for the Ocarina of Time remake, enjoy playing it, and hope that Nintendo reveals a Majora’s Mask remake later.
