5 Best Majora’s Mask Side Quests (Ranked)

Majora’s Mask has a significantly dark narrative, with Link meeting several NPCs on the verge of death, in grief, or going through substantial loss. You can help many of these NPCs with their issues, ranging from returning lost lovers to saving an old lady from a thief. Here are the best side quests in Majora’s Mask and what makes them stand out from others.

5. The Postman’s Final Night

This quest is as unique as the Postman in the game. The world is set to be destroyed, the moon is falling, and everyone is tense about what will happen or what they should do. The Postman can’t do anything but follow his schedule and complete his duty. This sets him apart from almost all the NPCs in the game, as his schedule restricts him from contemplating survival, as his job is his identity.

Link had the chance during Anju and Kafei’s quest to help the Postman gain freedom from his duty. This is different from other side quests in the game where Link helps someone overcome their grief and loss in different ways. In this side quest, Link allows the Postman to become free from his schedule and live before the world’s impending end.

4. Kamaro and the Rosa Sisters

Majora’s Mask’s story focuses substantially on grief, loss, and moving on. This side quest features a ghost who is still in the world, and Link can help him move on by learning his dance. The ghost, Kamaro, can only be seen during a part of the night. He asks Link to see and learn his dance and then teach it to others, so his legacy can remain in the world.

The Rosa Sisters are preparing for the festival, but are tense because they can’t perfect their dance. Link can use Kamaro’s Mask and teach them his dance, which will reward him with a Piece of Heart, and the Rosa Sisters will accept the protagonist as their master. This is one of the best side quests in Majora’s Mask, as Link can help a ghost find peace and also assist two humans in perfecting their craft.

3. Cremia’s Milk Run

This side quest requires Link to successfully protect Romani Ranch from the aliens, and he can then approach Cremia on the second day. The ranch owner will ask Link if he wants to accompany her as she makes a run to town to deliver her milk at night. It’s a good thing Cremia decided to ask Link to tag along, as the road is blocked and they must take a detour. Link will have to use his trusty bow to stop two masked robbers from destroying the milk shipment. The storyline also unfolds that the robbers are the Gorman Brothers, and their motive is for them to take over as the milk source of the town.

This isn’t a major side quest, involving significant effort or multiple NPCs. It’s straightforward, but it’s also the cumulative effort of opening up Romani Ranch by blowing up the boulder blocking its access, stopping the alien invasion, and finally helping Cremia deliver the milk to town. This helps save Cremia from losing her milk and her livelihood despite Romani and Link’s previous efforts. Link also gets Romani’s Mask that allows him to enter the Milk Bar in Clock Town, which opens up more side quests in Majora’s Mask.

2. Romani Ranch’s Alien Invasion

This is an interesting side quest, as nobody believes Romani when she says that aliens will abduct the cows from the ranch. She asks Link for his help, and even trains him by asking him to shoot balloons with his bow while riding Epona. Link can either help or return after the alien invasion to see that the cows and Romani are both gone. Cremia, Romani’s older sister, has no idea where her sibling and cows have disappeared. Romani later returns in a disoriented state, unable to remember what happened. This gives Cremia some semblance of loss, as she wonders whether she should have trusted Romani.

This side quest has the emotional depth of a young child trying to help save herself and her sibling from losing their livelihood. It also highlights how unbelievable things can sometimes be considered the wild imagination of kids. However, in this case, Romani is trying to face unfathomable danger to protect the ranch. Link can help Romani defeat the aliens and protect the cows, but nobody will know the lengths both characters went through to ensure the ranch’s safety.

1. Anju and Kafei

This is one of the longest and most emotional side quests in the game. Link finds out that the Mayor’s son, Kafei, is missing, and he was supposed to get married to his fiancée, Anju. This narrative is advanced throughout the three-day cycle, with multiple tasks Link must do to find out why Kafei went missing and help him regain his love. This gives Link an important task that he must complete alongside trying to save the world, leaving players to contemplate whether it’s more important to save the love of one couple or the entire world.

The emotional element is certainly a crucial variable in securing this as one of the best side quests in Majora’s Mask, but there is more to it. Link becomes a detective, must let an old lady be robbed, and completes puzzles as both himself and Kafei to complete the quest and reunite the two lovers. Anju and Kafei get married in the final hours of the third day, as the moon gets ready to crash, with Link ultimately having to return to the first day to continue his main quest.
