Best Games to Play While Waiting for the Ocarina of Time Remake

The Ocarina of Time remake will be released in roughly one month, and some fans may be dusting off their N64s or playing Ship of Harkinian on their PCs. However, there are several other games that can be played while fans wait for the Ocarina of Time remake to release. These games may be similar to Ocarina of Time and other Zelda games or be completely different, but still be good to play for OoT fans while waiting for the remake.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

The famous Zelda title takes Link to Termina, where he is caught in a 3-day loop and tasked with defeating the Skull Kid. Players learn that the Skull Kid has been taken over by a mask, and the moon will crash into Termina after three days; Link must stop this catastrophe. Majora’s Mask introduces several new mechanics, particularly allowing Link to transform into a Deku, Goron, and Zora. These aren’t just important for the narrative, but also change how the gameplay works in each form.

Majora’s Mask is literally the sequel to Ocarina of Time, which is why several fans have been speculating that Nintendo may remake it as well. The game relied significantly on OoT models, game system, and graphics. This ensures players will feel right at home, but also find enough unique features to not feel like they’re replaying Ocarina of Time.

Okami

This game is played as a white wolf, which is the form the sun goddess Amaterasu takes. The objective of the game is for players to fight an evil that is taking over the land. They can use the Celestial Brush, which modifies the world by drawing symbols. You can solve environmental problems or regrow vegetation simply by using the brush. Amaterasu has other weapons and Holy Artifacts that can be used during combat or for power boosts.

Okami is similar to the Zelda games, as it revolves around solving puzzles, exploring the world, and combat. You also find abilities, which you can use to advance in the game. This mechanic is similar to Ocarina of Time, as Link also finds new items that are crucial for progressing. There are some similarities between the two games, but Okami has a distinct feel and fantasy story.

Tunic

This is another game where the playable character isn’t a human, and instead you control a small fox. The fox wakes up in a ruined world and goes on an adventure to find out what happened. The game prioritizes exploring the various forests and ruins, and you can collect weapons or other useful items, which can come in handy. A unique mechanism of the game is that players find missing pages of an in-game instruction manual, gradually learning maps, mechanics, and other elements.

Tunic’s biggest similarity to the Zelda games may be that the game doesn’t spoon-feed players information. You must explore and observe to find clues, which makes the game more immersive. The world is also interconnected, and new abilities or items can allow players to progress. Tunic isn’t as grand as Ocarina of Time, but it’s one of the best games to play while waiting for the remake.

Darksiders

You play as a Horseman of the Apocalypse in Darksiders, who is stripped of his powers after being accused of triggering the apocalypse. You go to a ruined Earth in quest to find who was responsible for the crime. The gameplay revolves around exploring the world and dungeons. You unlock new weapons and abilities as you progress in the game, improving your combat and exploration skills.

Darksiders may be the most different-looking and feeling game compared to Ocarina of Time on this list. Despite this, the game features an interconnected world, puzzles, dungeons, and new abilities waiting to be collected. The game is close to the traditional Zelda formula, but is darker and more combat-focused.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

A mortal Fenyx embarks on a quest to save the Greek gods from the Titan Typhon. The game is open-world, which is a big difference compared to Ocarina of Time, and you can walk, swim, climb, glide, or ride. There are also several weapons you can use, including swords and bows, as well as powers granted by the gods. There are several ruins, puzzles, challenges, and mythological enemies that Fenyx comes across during his quest. The core progression mechanics revolve around improving Fenyx’s abilities and gear while exploring the world.

Ocarina of Time’s story was about saving Hyrule rather than gods, but Immortals Fenyx Rising has several other elements that make the game similar to the Zelda title. These include exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat. Environmental interactions aren’t just limited to dungeons, with Fenyx having to keep his eyes open even in the normal areas. New abilities help with combat and exploration while allowing Fenyx to advance to other areas. The open-world setting makes the game more modern, but Immortals Fenyx Rising is a good title to try before the Ocarina of Time remake is released.
