Best Sword and Potion Games on the PS5

The PS5 has a bunch of fantasy-themed games that feature swords, potions, and similar fantastical elements. It isn’t a stretch to say that the best fantasy games are those that make you feel like you’re in a new world far away from reality, though only a handful of sword and potion games have managed to achieve that on the PS5.

This article aims to highlight the best sword and potion fantasy games that you can play on the PS5. From the extremely popular Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade to the iconic Elden Ring, here are some of the best fantasy games that you can sink hours into.

5. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Midgar is only the first few hours of the original Final Fantasy VII, but the remake stretches it into a full story, with more depth and detail. Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge get proper screen time and personalities. The original soundtrack returns with modern updates. Intergrade, the PS5 version, improves visuals and adds INTERmission, a short episode starring Yuffie.

The battle system mixes action and menus. Moving and attacking fill the ATB gauge, and players can spend it to use items, cast abilities, and use spells. It’s intuitive, slowing down the game so players can use gauges. Since each character has their own gauge, each character has an important role. Unlike the original, this game’s story stops at the end of the Midgar Arc, and its sequel, FF7 Rebirth, continues from there.

4. Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has the player, who is the Arisen, travel through Vermund and Battahl with very little guidance, and that’s what makes it fun. The walk between objectives and towns keeps players on alert and ready, because multiple things can happen. A griffin might randomly attack the player and his crew, or a cyclops might come to fight. Players can choose from 10 vocations such as the Fighter, who uses a sword and shield, and the Archer, who fights from a distance with bows and arrows.

The game has a mechanic called Pawns, which are customizable AI companions who shout out enemy weaknesses, learn from each trip, and can be borrowed from other players. The story is weak, and the game had technical problems at launch, but recent updates heavily improved performance, added extra save slots, and added numerous quality-of-life changes. The game got an expansion titled Dark Arisen in October, 2026, which got excellent reviews from critics and fans.

3. Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2023. As a Larian game, it’s very open-ended, with multiple solutions to every problem, whether it’s as simple as getting through a door or as complex as fighting a huge wave of enemies. The game’s rules come from Dungeons & Dragons, with stats and dice rolls influencing success and failure.

The Western RPG’s companions are well written and keep players invested. Astarion, Karlach, and Shadowheart have their own arcs, and they react depending on what decisions the player makes. It can also be played in co-op, which is extremely fun with the right group of friends. One of the best things about Baldur’s Gate 3 is how console-friendly it is. While the sword and potion game plays in a top-down perspective that’s typically associated with PCs, you can still comfortably play it on a PS5 or some other console.

2. Elden Ring

Elden Ring was FromSoftware’s first attempt at an open-world soulslike, and they made it an almost perfect experience. Unlike in many other soulslike games, players can go somewhere else, level up, or find a better weapon when they’re stuck, then try again when they’re ready. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2022, and its freedom is a big reason for its success.

Curious players get rewarded with new weapons and gear. It’s also possible to summon allies using Spirit Ashes for tough fights. Those who want to take things even further can give the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC a go. Launching in 2024, the DLC adds an entirely new map for players to explore. Naturally, it’s filled to the brim with tough bosses to face and new NPCs to meet.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered

It isn’t a stretch to call The Witcher 3 one of the best games of all time. The game has everything that a good RPG can want, whether it’s excellent RPG mechanics or memorable side quests. A good example of a memorable side quest is the Bloody Baron’s questline in Velen, which players will likely recall even if they played the game a decade ago. Doug Cockle gives an excellent performance as Geralt, while the card game Gwent remains a fan favorite. The game won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2015, but has come to modern platforms.

The remaster arrived on PS5 on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for existing owners. The remastered version has reworked combat, NPC behavior, traversal, progression, and visuals. It’s still the same sword and potion game at heart, but this time with more modern mechanics in line with the PS5 and other modern platforms. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included in the remaster for free. They’re huge and well-written DLCs that can be considered a semi-sequel.
