Everything You Need to Know About Valve’s New Steam Controller

Last November, Valve announced a line up of new hardware: the Steam Machine, the Steam Controller and the Steam Frame. The Steam Controller, built for ‘comfortable, extended play’, allows users to access their whole Steam library, even games that do not have controller support at their forefront.

Initially, it was intended to be used and launched alongside the Steam Machine, however, the controller can be used ‘wherever steam is’ as Valve have stated, meaning it can be paired to the Steam Deck or your PC in order to enable controller play.

How much does the Steam Controller cost?

Originally, the three hardware pieces were launched without a price tag. This could be due to the RAM price surge or just because Valve was awaiting on a set cost. As of the 28th of April, Valve has confirmed that the Steam Controller will launch on May 4th and will set you back £84. This is around the same price bracket as other controllers on the market but definitely towards the more pricier end of hardware.

Where is the Steam Machine to pair with the Steam Controller?

Ultimately, as a result of the surge in the prices of RAM, Valve has had to make the decision to delay the release of the Steam Machine for the foreseeable future. Originally scheduled to drop early 2026 along with its snazzy friends, the Steam Machine was marketed as a living room console, set to shake up the market and introduce a PC gaming experience in console form with the Steam Machine allowing users to access their whole library with controller access.

How is it different from other controllers?

In comparison to other controllers, The Steam Controller has two track pads, allowing users to play mouse and keyboard games with increased precision (perfect for FPS games such as Counter Strike 2). With both USB and Bluetooth support, users can enjoy plug-in or wireless play, whichever they prefer. The Steam Controller has over 35 hours of battery life with early previews flooding in praising its longevity. In addition to this, its sleek and ergonomic design has been crafted for a light and comfortable feel when playing games.

When can I buy the Steam Controller?

The Steam Controller is available to purchase now. Make sure to keep an eye on all of Valve’s official sites as more information regarding the release of the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame is sure to come soon!
